Livin' on a Prairie (Avenue)

author: Franny Wentzel : Chicago, IL

image
Before the turn of the previous century Prairie Avenue on the South side of Chicago was a neighbourhood of fine homes including one of the more historic works of architecture... By the 1950s it was a seedy shadow of itself... Remarkably, a few old manses managed to survive in what was largely an industrial area. The area was only steps away from the McCormick Place exhibition grounds and in the last quarter century has seen quite a turnaround. Amazingly, a good portion of the new buildings have revived late 19th/early 20th century forms. A look at some of the plucky survivors. This house was hauled...

A Summer In Cabrini

author: Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee : Chicago, IL

There is footage on youtube.com titled Disco Nights in Cabrini Green 1977 of residents enjoying the festivities at the Mayor Byrne’s Summer Fest. I don’t think I got caught on tape but I remember being there. It’s funny a few years ago, I was wondering if anyone else remembered the summer fests and then about a few months ago, I was surfing on youtube.com and I typed in Cabrini Green and the footage of the fest appeared. Never in a million years, did I think expect to see any footage. I was a bit young and maybe...

A Christmas In Cabrini

author: Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee : Chicago, IL

A Christmas in Cabrini Green (In Memory of Dantrell Davis) Today, I would like to recall a Christmas in Cabrini that has been the crescendo of any Christmas that I have experienced throughout my travels. For thirteen years of my life I lived at 365 W. Oak St. which is one of the last "red" buildings left standing in Cabrini. Every Christmas my mother Rosetta Ambrose would pull out the tree and all of the children would reassemble it. Then Ma would play Christmas records by Nat King Cole, the Jackson...

From a collection of 'Picture Story Cards' put out by the Singer corporation's 'Society for Visual Education' division in 1966. Owing to the size of these I had to take them outside to photograph them so excuse the bits of reflectivity. This second of three sets that I own is titled 'Police Department Helpers'. Card one: Roll Call Card two: Squad Car Officers Card three: Administering First Aid Card four: Traffic Control Officer Card five: Crossing Guard & Patrol Boy Card six: Crime Laboratory in Operation Card seven: Police Canine Patrol Card eight: Target Practice

Why They've Got Us All Wrong

Let me ask you, what does a graffiti writer look like? How do they dress? What music are they into? I reckon these questions are unanswerable. Graffiti is a global phenomenon, which is constantly evolving, silently recruiting new members into...
