With the closing of the Space Shuttle programme and what is effectively the end of the 'American Century', let's look back on the first flight of the Columbia in 1981 courtesy of the National Geographic Magazine... Supposedly kids in school were planted before televisions to watch the first launch... America's space programme actually started with rocket-powered aeroplanes as the forward article notes...
