Bayside Cemetary: Rememberance Overgrown

author: CartLegger : New York, NY

Cities are shaped not just by people, but by time itself. Even something as permanent as death is pliable to the drift of time and tide. In this case, its the Jewish Eastern European community that once dominated East New York; where Jewish mobsters once held sway, and where my own family got their start in America—bakers, not gangsters. But they are all gone now, and likewise their memory fades, even the memory of their memory. Bayside Cemetery is part of an huge grouping in East New York--just off the A-Train, you have probably seen it before on the...

A traffic cop car with a traffic violation... justice is served! Congratulations, Unit 7653 of the for showing us that cops are not above the law... or, at least one of them isn't. Spotted in the west 30s somewhere between and {12th) Avenues after checking out the High Line...

Floyd Bennett Field: Let All Flags Fly

author: CartLegger : New York, NY

Community Gardens are an oasis in the fabric of the city. They dot formerly vacant lots and open spaces across the city. The biggest community garden is at Floyd Bennett Field at far edge of Brooklyn, on Jamaica Bay. It is their that 500 community gardens nuzzle up just off of the old tarmac. Their verdant acreage of these little plots is a patchwork tribute to individual expression. But some voices may go to far in the eyes of the authorities. Joe Bonserio is proud of his flag and its statement on the current state of America. The former Vietnam...

Governor's Island: Before the Slate Is Blank

author: CartLegger : New York, NY

Governor's Island is a relic of our city's long past, but it points firmly in the direction of the it's future. The Southern Tier of the Island, made up of landfill from the construction, has been shut down and abandoned since the Coast Guard left in 1996. The barracks, still standing, are the sole echo of the innocent good old days that a generation of Coast Guard families shared on the island. But a new life looms large, if uncertain, over these empty acres. There is a design competition being held this summer to decide between 5 "visions" for the island--plans...

Governor's Island

author: CartLegger : New York, NY

Its hard to believe this is the first post on citynoise about governor's island. It is one of my favorite spaces in the city, so close to all but with such a distant feel. It was only opened to the public in 2003, after 300 and some of years of military use. Those three centuries have left their mark on the landscape. While the rest of the city was shaped with the interest of accomodating teeming masses... ...Governor's Island was all about triangulation, clear lines of fire, and billetting troops to protect the city in time of war--as well...
