Building on a Difficult Lot in The City

author: Franny Wentzel : New York, NY

image
They're rarely the buildings you see in books but the problem of fitting a halfway decent looking building to an irregular lot has been a vexing one to architects for years... One of the oldest surviving skyscrapers is the 1896 Park Row Building designed by Robert H Robertson... it presents a lovely facade but turn the corner... ...of Anne Street and you see this slender facade There was no air conditioning back in the day so light courts were mandatory... It spent most of its days as a speculative office project also known as the Ivins Syndicate Building... ...but recently floors 11 - 25 were converted...

Pan Am Building - Concepts & Construction

author: Franny Wentzel : New York, NY

image
The apex of mid-century modern skyscrapers in NYC, the Pan Am building was pretty much reviled from the start but it's actually a fairly nice looking building The initial concept was so much worse Luckily Emory & Roth let Walter Gropius do the design work... The ever-so-optimistic concept model Why yes... we'll build your design Mister Architect Lets show it to the public and pretend we care about what they think of it. Nothing says fun like threading though a construction site on your morning commute Construction pix Completion pix
